Go Random
Here’s another good one for decision making – letting something else make the decision for you.
I recommend you only use it for less crucial decisions. There’s a fair chance the boss, the board, your partner etc will not go for, “but that’s the answer I got when I pulled it out of the hat!” when it comes to buying a house, relocating, spending millions of dollars of company money or choosing staff.
For example, my hubby always used to suggest he roll dice to choose his meal at a favourite restaurant. He knew he liked pretty much everything there, so he couldn’t go wrong. He never actually did roll dice, but that was mainly because he didn’t tend to carry his D20s with him in public (only the nerds will get that quip – if it goes over your head, don’t panic!). It was a big menu.
Instructions:
- Make a list of all suitable outcomes (the ones you’ve been mulling over). Get input from others if necessary. Any totally implausible ones should be discarded, however, it’s worthwhile including those that may be off-the-wall, but still can be implemented.
- Depending on the number of possibilities, use dice, a hat or a rather nice little random number generator I found on the web – www.random.org – to make the final decision
- The universe’s decision is final. So act on it.
