Get up close
This one is mainly for designers, who often need to look at things in a new way as part of the creative process. But if you take it a little less literally, I’m sure it can work with other applications.
Gather things that you find interesting or vaguely related to the problem, then focus in on them. Use a magnifying glass, macro lens or even a microscope if you have one handy. You will be amazed to see how object takes on a whole new life, with details, textures and light play that you don’t normally notice.
“Getting up close” was the technique used to create the Spicycat Creative identity, with my humble macro lens opening the doors to the secrets of spices. Even the humble peppercorn becomes a new world of potential.
